A woman who has spent her entire life in the East End celebrated her 100th birthday last weekend.

Rosina Van Dongen celebrated her landmark birthday on Sunday with a party for family and friends at her residential home in Teviot Street, Langdon Park, where she has lived for around 18 months.

Her niece, Irene Seaman, 72, has taken responsibility for caring for her since 2003, and took her on the recently opened cable car across the Thames last week.

Reflecting on Rosina’s reaction to reaching her 100th birthday, Irene said: “She was over the moon. She was born and bred in the East End - she used to work in Woolworths in Commercial Road when she was young.

“The party went really well - there must have been over 60 people there.”
