Families took over the famous Watney Market in London’s East End as part of a campaign to reclaim their neighbourhood.

They came from all over Shadwell and Stepney for springtime outdoor fun in the piazza off Commercial Road on Saturday, enjoying a break in the weather with activities for the very young and the very old.

Children’s games, artwork and face painting were laid on for the kids, with Henna and stalls for mums and even a senior citizens’ tea party.

The ‘piazza take-over’ was staged by The East London Communities Organisation, part of London Citizens’ network, through local schools, churches, mosques and neighbourhood groups.

Reclaiming the market was more symbolic, as the area had mostly escaped last summer’s disturbances when residents patrolled with traders to make sure the neighbourhood was trouble-free.
