VOTERS will choose whether Tower Hamlets will get a directly mayor.
Enough names have been handed in to the town hall at Mulberry Place to trigger a referendum which is likely to be held early next year before the General Election.
It could see voters choosing their MPs plus a new mayor next year.
The Respect party has collected an estimated 16,000 signatures for the petition but Labour in the East End is less enthusiastic about having an elected mayor who would be in power for four years and be in control of a multi-million pound budget.
There is also speculation about which politician might be interested in winning the top job in Tower Hamlets.
