East European food sparks poisoning scare

SHOPS are being urged by Town Hall food safety officials to remove Samsono’ branded Ears & Tongue roll from sale.

It follows a warning to Tower Hamlets Council from the Food Standards Agency about contamination by high levels of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium which can cause disease.

The contamination can lead to infection with symptoms occurring between eight hours and three months, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

More serious symptoms such as blood poisoning or meningitis could follow—while pregnant women could risk miscarriage or stillbirth.

The affected product from Lithuania was imported by Lignesa Foods and distributed mainly to Eastern European specialty food shops. They have recalled all Samsono’ brand Ears & Tongue Roll.

The levels of Listeria monocytogenes detected were well above the legal limit, the local authority said.
