More than 2,000 books were up for grabs when Morpeth Secondary held its free ‘giveaway’ book day.

Members of the public who dropped into the Bethnal Green school snapped up 1,500 books. The remaining 500 books have been given to charities in London’s East End.

“It went so well that we’re already planning next year’s ‘giveaway’,” Morpeth’s librarian Amanda Ball said.

“It’s good to know our books will be used by organisations such as the Scouts, to spread English literature and encourage reading.”

The ‘giveaway’ was arranged by Amanda for last month’s World Reading Night, organised by the Reading Agency to reach those who don’t regularly read.

Making the most of Morpeth’s ‘giveaway’ was the East London Scout Group, who took away scores of books to send to overseas learning centres to help teach children English.
