Ideas by pupils at east London’s Swanlea Secondary School in Whitechapel caught the eye of a panel of judges in the design competition.

Now their imaginative ideas taken from the Inca civilisation are going to be printed on T-shirts in time for the Games.

The judges have decided to take elements from competing entries to create the final one.

The contest had the theme of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, the first South American city to host the Games.

Designs had to be inspired by anything South American—such as colours, patterns and heritage.

The main inspiration had an Inca pattern, which is being sent off to be printed onto 500 T-shirts to be available during the Youth Games.

Elements of the final product have been chosen from ideas by Swanlea’s Niyaz Uddin in Year 9, Rumel Mohammed from Year 7 and Kausar Hussain in Year 8.

Swanlea Head of PE Chris Curran said: “Our students worked hard on all their ideas and it’s great to know more than one will be used—so their efforts were worth it.”

The contest organised by the Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation was also aimed at encouraging students to be more involved in sports.
