Bicycle helmets decorated by leading artists such as Tracey Emin, along with one by Boris Johnson, raised over 93,000 for an East End playground.

The auction at Sotheby’s coincided with the launch of a charity, The Legacy List, by the London Mayor and the Olympic Park Legacy Company. The charity will raise money for the long term regeneration of the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its surroundings.

Money raised from Monday’s private auction will go towards funding the charity’s first high profile commissions —an innovative play-space, next to 3 Mills film studios in Mill Lane, Bow.

A helmet designed and modelled by Mr Johnson himself raised 10,000. Other helmets were designed by artists Gavin Turk, Ron Arad and Marc Quinn.

A team comprising We Made That and Free Play were recently chosen to design the Three Mills Green Play-space, which is expected to cost 100,000.
