Profits from a new book this week on the hidden story of a London university campus which began as a pioneering Victorian philanthropic project are going towards helping today’s students in need.
The history of the University of London’s Queen Mary campuses at Mile End, Whitechapel and The City is uncovered in ‘The Making of Queen Mary’, from its humble beginnings to its groundbreaking world scientific and medical discoveries.
Author Ruth Valentine explores its first century, before focusing on the last 25 years during its greatest period of growth. Her research charts the merging of four institutions in the 1980s—Queen Mary and Westfield colleges and St Bartholomew’s and London Hospital medical colleges.
Queen Mary’s Principal Simon Gaskell said: “It’s important for us to remember the history and the characteristics that define Queen Mary as an institution, an acknowledgement of how far we’ve come.”
Profits are being given to Queen Mary University of London Foundation, which provides scholarships and support for gifted students. The book is available online at £15.
