A ‘big book giveaway’ takes place on Thursday at Bethnal Green’s Morpeth Secondary for anyone to drop in and pick something they fancy.

The event organised by school librarian Amanda Ball follows today’s World Book Night which celebrates reading and literature.

“There is a love for books and a desire to read, given the success of our first ‘big book giveaway’,” she said. “We had almost 1,000 fiction and non-fiction titles up for grabs last year, most of which were taken.

“We want to provide the chance for as many people as possible in the community to get their hands on even more books, by giving them away free.”

Up to 200 adults and children queued to pick up hundreds of free books at the school’s first ‘give away’ last year. The books include fiction and non-fiction for adults, teenagers and even toddlers.

Today’s ‘giveaway’ at Morpeth School in Portman Place, off Globe Road, runs 4.30 to 6pm.

World Book Night events have been taking place at libraries all over Britain, including readings, spoken word and reading sessions, book swaps and even book launches. It is held every year on April 23 with a focus on reaching those who don’t regularly read, organised by the Reading Agency charity to inspire people to become confident and enthusiastic readers.
