Two students from Cambridge Heath Sixth Form College in London’s East End were picked to spend four days on a structured internship with a leading City financial investment firm.

Anhar Miah and Syed Hussain, both 19, who have been studying at the Bethnal Green campus for two years, want careers in finance.

They were selected for the scheme when the Man Group near London Bridge extended its internship to a wider range of candidates.

Their placements were arranged with Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership which has worked with Man Group on several previous projects.

Anhar and Syed were part of a 12-strong group of interns and had a busy four days looking at different aspects of the company’s business.

Syed, who has a provisional place at City University to study financial risk management, admitted: “I want to get into investment, but didn’t have a clear idea of exactly what it was about.

“Now I’ve seen it has many aspects I am leaning more towards the analytical and research side.”

His classmate Anhar has his sights set on becoming an actuary and has an unconditional offer to read Maths and Economics at Bristol University.

Anhar said: “My studies have been more on the sciences and maths side, so I don’t know that much about economics.

“But I am more drawn towards research and asset management—definitely not the trading floor.”

There were also visits to other organisations, including the London Metal Exchange, Bloomberg and the Bank of England.
