Celebrity builder Tommy Walsh will tomorrow be downing his tools for a wartime inspired Tea Dance in support of the borough’s city status bid.

The Hackney born TV personality will be joining Tower Hamlets Mayor, Lutfur Rahman, and survivors of the Bethnal Green tube disaster for the tea dance at York Hall on Old Ford Road in Bethnal Green.

Mr Walsh, who shot to fame, on BBC’s gardening programme Ground Force, is a patron of The Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust, a charity set up to raise funds to build a memorial to those who lost their lives lost during the 1943 disaster.

Tower Hamlets is competing against 24 other towns and boroughs to be named the UK’s next city, as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.

The tea dance at 2.15pm is being sponsored by Canary Wharf Group.
