A new bell installed in the tower of a Whitechapel primary school has joined the famous bells that ring out across the East End, as popularised in the children’s classic song Oranges and Lemons.
The bell was inaugurated at the Harry Gosling Primary School, in Fairclough Street, yesterday to coincide with Valentine’s Day.
During the ceremony, each pupil made a wish for their future on the bell, and an inscription on the bell reads: “Every time our bell rings, we step closer to our dreams.”
The bell was forged at the famous Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which is located nearby and has made a number of famous bells, including Big Ben and the Olympic Bell.
