Good news for student in need of financial support as an East End university has announced more than 350 scholarships for the 2017/18 academic year.

The scholarships will be open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Queen Mary University London (QMUL) and exceeds the amount offered in 2015 and 2016.

In total the scholarships amount to £3 million in funding for the university.

Professor Julia Shelton, chair for the scholarship committee, said: “We are proud to see a record number of scholarships on offer this year, following a steady increase over the past two years.

“This achievement further indicates our commitment to promoting excellence and encouraging students to continue to work hard.”

The scholarships are open to all students who meet a certain criteria, with some schemes aimed at UK, Eu and international students.

Each scholarship varies in duration and value, although the majority are worth around £5,000 a year covering full tuition fees and living costs.

Fayza Batool Din, who is in receipt of a science & engineering excellence scholarship, said the scholarship has helped her in several aspects of her life.

“Getting a merit-based scholarship has been very rewarding in so many aspects,” said Fayza.

“It is something I can talk about in job interviews as a means of demonstrating my academic abilities. It has also paved the way for me to cover my educational expenses.

“All in all, it has only made me more determined to achieve my end goal of graduating with a high grade.”

Stephan Chee, who received the same scholarship as Fayza, agreed with his peer and said the scheme acts as a source of motivation.

“The scholarship has definitely motivated me to aim and achieve higher, with each subsequent renewal challenging me to do better,” said Stephan.

Many scholarships are provided in partnership with organisations that work closely with the university - such as the Chevening scholarship.
