Schoolchildren in east London really got into the spirit of World Book Day with a week of festivities and helping Olympic cycling champ Sir Chris Hoy launch his first book series.
The Discover Children’s Story Centre staged Stratford’s Big Write Festival of Children’s Literature, with much-loved author Michael Rosen and debut children’s author Sir Chris.
Some 350 youngsters dressed as their favourite book characters and joined Sir Chris, along with his co-author Joanna Nadin and illustrator Clare Elsom at Stratford Old Town Hall, for the launch of their new Flying Fergus book series—magical stories about an ordinary boy and his extraordinary bike.
Hundreds of books were signed with children taking their very own copies away with them.
Another 350 children later joined Rosen for a poetry reading and book signing at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.
Rosen returned to Stratford on Saturday with Children’s Laureate and author Chris Riddell performing their collection of poems for young children, A Great Big Cuddle, at Stratford public library.
The festival continued on Sunday with the 20th anniversary of Horrible Science with the illustrator Tony De Saulles in Stratford East Picturehouse.
Discover Story Centre is running the last of the festival’s all-day drop-in sessions today for children aged three to six.
It is also putting on a toddler event, Rhythm and Rhymes, for aged two to five, at 12:.30pm, 2pm and 3.45pm.
