A new science specialist free school planned in east London has been shortlisted by the Department for Education.
The Physics teacher behind the East London Science School, which hopes to open in September next year offering pupils three sciences until the age of 16, regardless of ability, has been asked to attend an interview in Whitehall on May 14.
“We have a shortage of science and engineering graduates in this country,” said physics teacher David Perks.
“The more support we get from parents, the more evidence we can present to the Education Department that there’s a need for a new school in east London for children to study the sciences and go on to top universities and inspire a new generation of scientists, medics and engineers.”
He hopes to open with the first intake of Year 7 pupils next year and a sixth form by 2014. Several sites are being looked at in Tower Hamlets and Newham.
