Christmas has come early for little Scarlett McCarthy and her chums at her Magic Breakfast club after she came top in a London schools art competition.
The seven-year-old designed a Christmas card to represent Shadwell’s St Mary & St Michael Primary school for the competition organised by the Magic Breakfast charity with London Assembly members.
Her breakfast club, which has 75 pupils aged four to 11, now gets a £25 book token from the charity which sends food to 150 schools across London to provide “the right fuel for learning.”
John Biggs, who represents east London on the Assembly, welcomed pupils from Scarlett’s school who visited City Hall today.
“We need to make sure all children are provided for in the morning,” he said. “Breakfast clubs allows children to get a proper start to the day as well as allowing parents to get off to work.”
He’ll be using Scarlett’s design of the Fairy Queen in red with her magic wand as his official City Hall Christmas card this year.
The competition was aimed at spreading the word to parents that the clubs exist to make sure no child starts the day too hungry to learn.
