Children are going ‘out of this world’ at a free space-themed ‘Fun Palace’ celebration of arts and culture in east London all day tomorrow.
It includes astronaut storytelling, inter-galactic music and movement workshops, rocket craft activities, stars and planets art sessions and science experiments for all ages, staged at the Half Moon theatre in Limehouse.
Fun Palaces are about working with communities from the grassroots up, bringing people together to create arts and sciences events.
They are based on a ‘never developed’ idea by East End theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price.
The first Fun Palaces in 2014 had 138 venues, communities and groups creating their own local events around the world with 3,000 volunteers, which attracted 40,000 people and tens-of-thousands more online.
The number of venues taking part by 2015 rose to 142, with 50,000 people involved.
The Saturday free family event from 10am to 4pm at the Half Moon in White Horse Road, off Commercial Road near Limehouse DLR, is being staged alongside the theatre’s Pictures at Play exhibition with winning entries from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators competition.
