Central Foundation Girls’ School is the best performing secondary school in Tower Hamlets, new figures have revealed.

Department for Education statistics show that the school, in Bow, recorded the highest progress 8 score in the borough based on 2017 GCSE results.

The measure, introduced in 2016, shows how much progress pupils at a school made in eight subjects between the end of Key Stage 2 and the end of Key Stage 4, compared to their counterparts who got similar results at the end of Key Stage 2.

Progress 8 scores are centred around 0, with most schools within the range of -1 to +1. The data shows how many schools have missed the government’s floor standard of -0.5.

Oaklands School, Mulberry School for Girls and St Paul’s Way Trust School all also recorded above average progress 8 scores.

Jamiatul Ummah School had the highest proportion of pupils achieving a grade 5 or above in English and maths, with 93pc of the 27-strong cohort doing so. London East Academy and Wapping High School were next, both with 65pc.

Mulberry School for Girls, in Richard Street, Whitechapel, had the highest proportionc of pupils - 49pc - achieve the EBacc, which consists of a grade 5 or C or above in English, maths, science, a language and either geography or history,

School standards minister Nick Gibb said: “Academic standards are rising in our schools thanks to our reforms and the hard work of teachers, with 1.9million more children in good or outstanding schools than in 2010.

“The results reinforce this success, with teachers and pupils responding well to the new more rigorous curriculum introduced by this government.”

He added: “We will continue to use this evidence to drive up standards even further for all pupils so that they leave school prepared for future success in their education and beyond, helping to build a Britain that is fit for the future.”
