Children have designed their own Healthy Recipe booklet which is now being displayed for patients at a health centre in London’s deprived East End.
The youngsters from Poplar’s Bygrove Primary researched nourishing recipes and put them in a booklet they created in a Banana Bytes charity healthy eating project.
They had them printed up and handed them to Dr Zahra Husain at Chrisp Street health centre for the public.
Dr Zahra has given talks in the school on a better understanding of why we should eat more healthily.
“Sustained healthy eating has a positive outcome on health and life,” she told the youngsters. “It was good to support such a project and see your hard work.”
The booklet was created for the Banana Bytes programme run by Artspoke charity in its ‘healthy eating’ campaign in Tower Hamlets schools, an area with high levels of diabetes and child obesity.
Dr Zahra took the children on a tour of the centre and her consulting room to show how blood pressure is taken—and to demonstrate a urine sample test with water!
The youngsters had a chance to use a stethoscope and hear their own heart beat.

Practice Manager Simon Robinson said: “The children’s booklet has some good tips and several of us have spotted a recipe we’d like to try. Inviting the children to the surgery was the least we could do.”
The booklet has 10 healthy recipes chosen by their class teacher and nursery nurse.
The health centre is displaying the booklet with recipe leaflets, videos and posters from four East London schools including Woolmore, Mayflower and Marner Shine as well as Bygrove.
The recipe booklets are available at Chrisp Street, Newby and St Andrew’s health centres—while copies last!
