Around 80 people turned out to celebrate a “humble” spud yesterday at Spitalfields City Farm

It was the first time the farm in Buxton Street had hosted a potato day.

Visitors were offered advice on different varieties of potatoes and how to grow the spuds. Children played around in the tree hut and met the animals, and were served leak and potato soup to help them keep warm.

Farm manager Mhairi Weir said: “It’s the time of year to start thinking about putting seeds in the ground so we thought we would have a small event to celebrate the humble spud.

Given the time of year and the cold weather it was not a bad turn-out.”
