Schoolkids have been using sport to help improve their class work in London’s East End.

The youngsters from Stepney’s Sir John Cass Secondary have been in a four-month training programme, along with students from sixth form campuses, Newham College in Stratford and East Ham, NewVIc in Plaistow and Hackney Community in Hoxton, for the EDF Indoor Athletics championships.

The training by professional coaches from the Team Falola Trust was based on their attitude and pushes them into committing to improve their academic studies as well as performance in sport.

The zenith of the programme was the finals last week when they met double European gold medallist and Olympian Perri Shakes-Drayton, who presented medals.

The youngsters also quizzed the champ in a questions-and-answers session about his achievement.
