School may be out but a group of East End children have found another way to keep busy this summer - by building a city.

Ditching diggers and strong cups of tea for paintbrushes, kitchen roll and squash, the youngsters turned Mile End Park into a cardboard town last week.

They used inspiring landmarks like the Tower of London and Canary Wharf skyline to create their maze of dens.

The council, which organised the event with Mile End Park play staff, said the event was to support Tower Hamlets’ bid to become the next city during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The 24 council competing for the accolade will find out early next year if they are the successful bidder.
