Morpeth gets Ofsted praise for last Summer’s GCSE results

ONE school has bucked the trend in London’s East End with a commendation in an Ofsted report for “excelling against the odds”. Morpeth Secondary in Bethnal Green is only one of 12 schools in the country recognised by inspectors for its success in teaching within challenging circumstances

ONE school has bucked the trend in London’s East End with a commendation in an Ofsted report for “excelling against the odds”.

Morpeth Secondary in Bethnal Green is only one of 12 schools in the country recognised by inspectors for its success in teaching within challenging circumstances.

The school has been rated as outstanding’ following two inspections.

Latest GCSE results put it among the top secondaries in Tower Hamlets with 53 per cent of pupils achieving grades A* to C including English and Maths last summer, compared to 11 per cent in 1992.

Morpeth is described in the report as having a “powerful culture and ethos, based on a strong, shared commitment to meeting students’ often complex needs”.

Head teacher Sir Alasdair Macdonald is praised for his commitment to “moral purpose, integrity and trust.”
