Students at two east London halls of residents in Mile End have prevented an estimated eight tonnes of harmful CO2 gas seeping into the atmosphere in the past 12 months.

The students living in Maurice Court and Lynden House were top in a ‘Switch Off’ campaign at the University of London’s Queen Mary campus for reduced energy consumption by 15 per cent compared to those who lived on campus when levels were measured five years ago.

They came out winners this week in the contest, after a campaign which included photo competitions and tips on how to save energy.

The campus overall used an average of 4.2 per cent less energy, equivalent to boiling water for one-and-a-half million cups of tea.
