Students from Queen Mary University are competing at Silverstone this week in a tough engineering competition to build and race their own car.
The 2018 ‘Formula Student’ challenges universities to design, build and race a single-seater in one year, judged on speed, acceleration and endurance, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.
This is also the first year driverless vehicles are included, with integrated electronics, software and systems engineering.
“It is already transforming so many industries including the automotive sector,” Student Formula chairman Andrew Deakin said. “This new ‘driverless’ element encourages students to look to the future by designing software for a fully-autonomous Formula One-style vehicle.”
The Queen Mary team competes against 129 teams from 30 countries, having won ‘best newcomer’ award last year. Its 40 members are studying mechanical, medical and aerospace engineering, as well as finance, computer science, film studies and business management. The project is part of a degree-level programme as the standard for engineering graduates to meet.
