A children’s art competition run by an East London Vicar to mark the Jubilee was judged by the Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts last week.

The contest, organised by Rev Gordon Warren, Rector of St Anne’s Limehouse church, was launched with the aim of raising children’s awareness of the role of the Queen.

Five schools from the church’s parish submitted entries of art and poetry, and the winner of the art compeition was announced as Jahiba Abedin, 7, of Sir William Burrough Primary School, Tower Hamlets.

The competition was judged by Chief Executive of the Royal Academy, Dr Charles Saumarez Smith CBE, and artist Lady Rosie West. Dr Smith will be presenting Jahiba with his prize on Friday, June 22, at St. Anne’s.

Rev Warren was delighted with the standards of the pictures, and believed they showed how successfully the Jubilee has raised awareness of the Royal Family among children.

He said: “The entries were superb, and really reflect how well the schools have been doing in teaching children the background to the Royal Family. The winning picture is just amazing, and the standard of all the entries was fantastic.”

All of the pictures will be exhibited at St Anne’s from Tuesday, June 5 to Monday, June 25, allowing members of the public to view the pictures themselves for free.

The poetry competition was judged by literary agent Deborah Owen and children’s poet Joseph Coelho. The winning poem, which you can read below, was penned by Catherine Beartrice Lowe, 10, also of Sir William Burrough School.
