Hundreds of Tower Hamlets school children who had never been inside a theatre have had a taste of the limelight.

The primary school pupils, aged nine to 11, first watched a poetry show at the Half Moon Young People’s theatre in Limehouse, as part of the four-month long PoetryQuest project.

Poets then visited the schools and ran poetry writing workshops before the pupils returned to the theatre last week to put on their own poetry performance, alongside Nigerian rap artist and writer BREIS.

Around 240 pupils from Bonner, Bigland Green, Manorfield and Stewart Headlam schools took part in the initiative run by charity the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts.

Project manager Tom MacAndrew said: “Many of the pupils had never been in a theatre before and when they first arrived they were quite shy. But when they returned for their own performance they were full of confidence.”
