Parent workshops on how to manage stress, anxiety, depression and low self-confidence are being held at Poplar’s Langdon Park Secondary.
The school is teaching stress management skills in mental health and wellbeing as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.
“Several parents made self-referrals to get counselling, which shows just how relevant counselling is,” parent support practitioner Nicky Mutale said. “It’s our duty as a school to make sure students and parents get support throughout their time at Langdon Park.”
Workshops throughout the school year are part of the school’s ‘life beyond the classroom’ programme for families, taking on topics such as wellbeing, hate crime and how to keep children safe online.
Headteacher Richard Fitzgerald: “They raise awareness of issues that affect people in every community, including ours, and provide the right guidance for people who need help.”
A ‘wellbeing’ event at the school attended by parents and others explored symptoms of anxiety and depression, how to identify them and how to get help from services available.
