MANY schools in East London have missed out on the Ordnance Survey’s offer of free maps for every child in Year 7.

The agency’s Free Maps for 11-year-olds’ project making OS Explorer maps available to children all over Britain got off to a poor start in East London because many Tower Hamlets schools didn’t make their order in time.

“It’s disappointing that some schools are yet to get in touch with us,” said Ordnance Survey’s education manager Roger Jeans.

“We urged schools that hadn’t been in touch to do so right away to avoid missing out.”

The agency even extended the deadline, but there were still many schools that missed out.

But there’s always the New year. Ordnance Survey’s free map’ promotion has been running annually since 2002 and has been a nationwide success with the 5,000,000th map given away this year.

The scheme is designed to encourage geography and environmental studies in and out of the classroom, getting pupils to explore their locality with their families and learn about practical map reading.
