Teenagers have opted for competitive science and maths projects at school on Friday afternoons in London’s East End rather than starting the weekend early.
Pupils at Bethnal Green’s Morpeth Secondary are taking part in a new extra-curricular programme to test their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics programme was started in September by school librarian Amanda Ball.
“The kids enjoy the competition aspect of it,” she said. “They also teach each other how to improve.”
The programme invites students from Years 7 to 9 to take part in “collaborative and competitive” projects, with no sign-up process required.
Around 12 students take part in tasks every week, such as building free-standing towers out of newspaper and tape or making masks and moveable hands from scratch.
