SCREAMS of joy could be heard in an East End college as A-level results came out on Thursday.
Anxious sixth-formers at Tower Hamlets College ripped open their brown envelopes to discover whether they had received the right grades to go to their chosen university.
The college in Poplar High Street scored a 94 per cent overall pass rate with eight students receiving the new top mark of A*.
Among the successes was wannabe doctor, Aminul Islam, who received three As which won him a place at King’s College London to study Medicine.
The 18-year-old who lives in Robin Hood Gardens in Blackwall will be the first of his eight brothers and sisters to become a doctor.
And he has already been given a taster of life on the wards after volunteering once a week at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
He said: “I decided when I was in Year 9 that I wanted to study medicine. And working at the Royal London was really rewarding and I think it was good for the patients to see a friendly face.”
But Aminul who is fasting for Ramadan says he will have to wait until Eid to celebrate his success.
Meanwhile Lithuanian-born Egle Jancauskaite also received straight As in Economics, Accounts and Business Studies and was waiting to hear the result of her GCSE exam in Maths.
The 20-year-old will be studying Economics at university with the hope of working at one of London’s big finance companies in the future.
She said: “I feel really happy. I did work really hard as when I started at the college I knew I wanted to get three As. I had very little time throughout the year as I was working so hard. And now I have a place at Leeds University.”
The college had a 100 per cent pass rate in six of its subjects, including History, Art & Design and Computing and 63 per cent of students who studied Further Maths received an A*-B grade.
