Youngsters in deprived ‘inner city’ neighbourhoods in the East End and across London are being encouraged to volunteer to help make a difference to their community through sport and social action.
A new ‘pathway’ programme into education, training and employment is being set up in Tower Hamlets and four other London boroughs by Active Communities Network charity, which has been given £124,000 Big Lottery cash from Sport England.
The charity’s Oliur Rahman said: “We have worked with 500 young people in Tower Hamlets alone who are eager to give something back to the community. This funding will help us start a project to harnesses their enthusiasm.”
The charity wants to create “a new generation of volunteers” to make a difference in communities where social deprivation is high.
The volunteering programme being run in Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Brent, Southwark and Lambeth aims is to get more youngsters and teenagers contributing to their communities while developing their own skills.
