Cricket-mad students punched the air after they scooped a Lord’s Taverners tournament.
A team from Tower Hamlets College saw off rivals from the Hackney No Limits community group and from Southwark College to win the Gold.
One of the team, Muhammed Jakaria, was named ‘Player of the Year’ at the awards ceremony afterwards, where they met famous West Indies cricket legends Sir Viv Richards, Sir Clive Lloyd and Joel Garner.
Muhammed’s team-mate Mike Punjabi, 20, won the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award.
“We have been training hard since last year,” Mike said. “So it was great to finally play in a tournament.
“We’re all so happy the college won the Gold.”
Two other students also picked up awards, Carly Steele for ‘Most Improved Player’ and Alain Jason ‘Coach of the Year’.
Tower Hamlets College mentoring coordinator Tanya Blake said: “Our Foundation Learning cricketers have shown tremendous focus and commitment in training, so it was nice to see their hard work pay off.”
The Disability tournament run by the Lord’s Taveners charity at the famous Kennington Oval ground in south London was organised through the Middlesex County Cricket Association as part of a project to widen participation in sport by disadvantaged and disabled youngsters.
The charity runs a programme with the County Cricket boards of Middlesex, Essex, Kent and Surrey to promote equality in sport and aims to get 640 disabled youngsters across London involved over the next three years.
