Youngsters in east London wanting to go to university in September but are worried about how they’ll pay for it can now apply for a City Airport grant.
Bursaries worth £2,000 a year for three-year courses are being made available under the airport’s University Prize scheme, with management mentors and paid work experience also on offer.
London City Airport’s Liam McKay said: “Our scheme is a helping hand to go to university which also helps give students skills who may become future employees of the airport or other businesses.”
Applications are now invited for the next academic year, with the closing date July 5—three students are selected each year for the scheme which has been running since 2004.
Third year geography student Billy Allgood, who is on the scheme and studying at Southampton University, said: “One of the benefits has been the work experience offered by the airport.
“I’ve been accepted for a PGCE for primary school teaching in east London after I graduate and the interviews were made easier knowing I could draw on a my experience gained through the scheme.”
Prospective students have to live in Newham, Tower Hamlets or Greenwich to be eligible, have a place to begin a degree this year related to transport, business, geography or foreign languages and be expecting to achieve a minimum of 240 UCAS points.
