Veteran children’s author Judith Kerr gave a special reading of her much-loved classic The Tiger Who Came to Tea for 100 East End youngsters.
The 88-year-old author visited the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green on Friday (July 29) to see the exhibition that has been running over the summer holidays in her honour.
Ms Kerr, who also wrote the Mog series, reckons the key to keeping children’s attention is to offer them real-life scenarios, mixed in with some magic.
She said: “The books, particularly the Mog picture books, are based on real things that our cat did, such as refusing to use her cat flap and being terrified of the Christmas tree. Children can relate to all these things, I think.”
The exhibition shows original artwork, notes and sketches that the writer created more than 40 years ago for The Tiger Who Came to Tea – a book which has been translated into 11 languages and sold more than five million copies.
She added that it was “wonderful” to see families enjoying the exhibition.
