EIGHT artists have been shortlisted for the inaugural 45,000 sculpture competition in Spitalfields.

The winning sculpture will take pride of place in Bishops Square, Spitalfields and is likely to be seen by more than 70,000 people a week. The shortlist includes work inspired by the Oscar Wilde story of The Happy Prince and a sculpture of a scapegoat by Kenny Hunter and Nick Hornby's piece which shows six different aspects of Spitalfields.

The public will be invited to vote for the one sculpture they think should appear in the Square.

The eight shortlisted designs will be exhibited from January 12 to February 12 next year in the foyer of law firm Allen and Overy LLP on Bishops Square, next to the planned site of the sculpture.

The public vote will be combined with the votes of the judges and the winning sculpture will go on display in October 2010.
