ELECTRIC car drivers will soon be able to recharge in the East End as Sainsbury's sets up a network of charging points.

The food superstore in Cambridge Heath Road in Whitechapel is due to have a charge point in its car park by the end of the month for customers to use for free.

It is the first business to install the charging points and will have 11 in London.

And the move will boost Mayor Boris Johnson's plan to make London "the electric vehicle capital of Europe" in a bid to cut carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2025.

Sainsbury's commercial director, Neil Sachdev, said: "This will turn London into an electric vehicle superhighway, giving electric car drivers greater freedom.
