Anyone who’s ever wanted to see how London’s famous Tower Bridge works can have a sneak look behind the scenes in the New Year.
The world’s most iconic bridge dating back to 1894 opens its inner sanctum doors ‘back stage’ to visitors every weekend from January to March.
The annual Engineering Tours include areas normally out-of-bounds to the public, such as the huge bascule chamber below the riverbed level that fills up with the giant counter-weight when the bridge is up to let shipping through.
They also take in the Victorian engine rooms with the restored steam-pumping engines and boilers that were used to lift the bascules until 1976, the Control Room and the panoramic Walkways 130ft above the Thames with views across London.
The �30 tickets have just gone on sale on a first-come-first-served basis.
