NEW figures show the majority of children in Tower Hamlets speak English as a second language.

Statistics from the David Cameron's recently former Department of Education show 78 per cent of pupils in the borough do not speak English as their first language.

A spokesman for Tower Hamlets Council said: "It's important to note that because a child speaks English as another language, it doesn't mean they do not speak English competently.

"They may well speak another language at home, but they also speak English and all lessons are conducted in English."

Nationally, there are 905,610 pupils with English as a second language - up 42,750 in the last year.
