RESIDENTS embraced the great outdoors during a special nature event last week.

Tree climbing, willow weaving, pond dipping and story telling were just some of the activities enjoyed by children and their parents at Mile End Park.

Green fingered sorts among them then proudly gathered at the park’s Ecology Pavilion to celebrate the annual Tower Hamlets in Bloom competition.

Margaret Cox, who represented the Teesdale and Hollybush Community Gardens, picked up the tenant and resident associations first prize for best community garden.

She said: “It was an excellent event and gave us the chance to meet other growers, share ideas and see all the efforts that everyone goes to brighten up their communities.”

More than 400 residents turned out for the event, on Saturday October 9.

Tower Hamlets council organised the competition as part of a nationwide scheme to encourage people’s interest in plants, wildlife and the environment.

This year, a total of 69 residents, businesses, community groups and schools were awarded as part of the awards.
