Tower Hamlets Homes launches recycling campaign

Tower Hamlets Homes has launched a recycling project in an attempt to clean up its estates.

Since teams of caretakers were assembled for the task six weeks ago, they have filled 490 recycling bags, over six estates across the East End.

The service improvement group of Tower Hamlets Homes was asked to try to increase levels of waste recycling on estates.

Chair of the group, local resident Margaret Cox, said: “We picked the waste project to show just how much litter is discarded everyday on our estates and how much more could be recycled.”

The group is now looking into rolling the project out to all 27 of its estates.

The issue of litter in Tower Hamlets has been widely publicised in recent weeks. The council’s claims that 97.7 per cent of the borough’s streets are free from litter have been strongly refuted by the opposition Labour Group.

Labour have subsequently posted a number of photos on Twitter of fly tipping and litter in the borough’s streets.
