Presenter and Childline founder Esther Rantzen was in Bethnal Green last night to open an exhibition at the Museum of Childhood.
Modern British Childhood 1948-2012, which opens to the public on Saturday, explores the development of British childhood between the 1948 and 2012 London Olympics.
Ms Rantzen, who last week spoke of her conviction in the child sex abuse allegations made against the late Jimmy Savile, founded Childline in 1986.
She was at the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood, on Cambridge Heath Road, to formally open the exhibition last night.
Also present was Joe Birrell, who took part as an 18-year-old in the 1948 Games, and Anne Wood, creator of Teletubbies.
The exhibition features artefacts from a pair of 1950s children’s NHS prescription glasses to the 2005 Teddy mobile phone designed for under fives.
It traces the transformation of childhood through education, health, family, entertainment, fashion and play, as well as considering the impact of politics and the economy.
