Families on the East End’s biggest housing estate are getting a barbecue ready to celebrate the end of four years of massive building work.

The 2,000 households on Stepney’s Ocean Estate are having a community party and fun activities for children on Saturday afternoon.

It is being staged at Shandy Park in Stepney Green by East Thames Group with Bellway Homes which have been carrying out “a wholesale regeneration programme” on the post-war estate first opened in the 1950s.

Some £220 million has been ploughed into the programme by Tower Hamlets Council from Whitehall urban renewal funding.

The investment has resulted in 800 new homes in a mix of private, social rent and shared ownership being added to the existing 1,200 council homes which have been modernised and improved.

New community facilities and shops have also been added, as well as landscaping.

The programme has also generated hundreds of jobs and helped many people on the dole find work in construction and other industries.

Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman is popping down to the estate to fan the flames of the barbecue and meet the families who are sighing with relief that all the building work is finally over.
