Families woke in the middle of the night when fire broke out in a block of maisonettes at Shadwell — just 48 hours after the tragedy at Grenfell Tower in Ladbroke Grove.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called to the blaze at the maisonettes in James Voller Way, behind Shadwell’s Watnery Market, at 1.20am on Friday.

A large part of fencing and some of the decking on the third floor roof terrace of the building was damaged by fire.Fire crews arrived from nearby Shadwell and Whitechapel fire-stations, as well as Bethnal Green and from Dockhead in Bermondsey.

They got the blaze out in just over an hour.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
