Households which have signed up to a new ‘energy co-operative’ in London’s deprived East End are being offered cheap gas and electricity.
They could save up to £122 on their bills every tear, it is estimated, following an auction with energy companies.
Some 2,000 households have now joined Tower Hamlets Community Power, which was set up last year to help families out of ‘fuel poverty’ and was one of the first schemes of its kind in the country. But anyone can sign up—it’s not means tested, nor based on household income.
The co-operative has joined with the Big London Energy Switch, a scheme backed by 20 London boroughs which uses auctions where energy companies offer cheaper tariffs to consumers who register.
An auction earlier this month involved collective energy switching schemes for 160,000 households up and down the country, including the 2,000 in the East End.
