Internationally renowned poet Wendy Cope will be giving a reading of her most well-known works, and discussing her life and career, at a literary event in Bethnal Green on Saturday, February 9.

The author of ‘Bloody Men’, which famously compared men to buses (in that women wait ages for one, then several appear at once), will be at the new venue Poetry East, based at the London Buddhist Centre in Roman Road.

Wendy, who grew up in Kent, has received a prestigious award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters was voted the listeners’ choice in a BBC Radio 4 poll to succeed Ted Hughes as Poet Laureate in 1998. Her latest collection, Family Values, was published in 2011.

Founder and host of Poetry East, Maitreyabandhu, said: “I am very pleased to have Wendy with us at Poetry East. Following Jo Shapcott, Sean O’Brien and Don Paterson, having Wendy Cope read at Poetry East really shows how the East End is attracting the best of UK poetry.”
