A FAR-right group has claimed credit for the cancellation of an Islamic conference in the East End.

The English Defence League issued a statement following the Troxy's decision to cancel "The Book That Shook the World," which was slated for June 20.

A number of speakers due to take part in the conference had attracted controversy - although none were on the government's banned list.

The EDL had planned to visit Tower Hamlets and hold a demonstration against the conference.

An EDL statement said: "We have achieved a great victory by putting pressure on Tower Hamlets council to force the cancellation of the controversial conference that was due to take place at the Troxy."

Although the EDL is claiming credit for the cancellation, a spokesman for the Troxy said wider public order issues were behind the decision.

The venue has recently signed Tower Hamlets Council's "No Place for Hate" pledge.

A statement released by the venue said: "Troxy has spoken at great length with relevant bodies and on the basis of the outcomes of these meetings, the venue is concerned that the content of the conference would be in conflict to the pledge.
