Viewpoint: One Stop Shops provide key service and should not be closed

PUBLISHED: 08:00 15 December 2018

The four Tower Hamlets One Stop Shops, strategically located across the borough and open six days a week, provide a service that enables residents to deal with the council on many issues with helpful and experienced staff.

There have been suggestions that the council is considering closing them. I have sought answers on this and now understand that there are proposals to re-locate them to Idea Stores.

This will see a valuable service for residents changing, possibly beyond recognition.

At the same time the costs of the proposed new civic centre are spiralling out of control. What started at £77million is now costing £120million.

The evidence of other, similar projects,is that this will increase further.

The £43million increase in the Civic Centre project would go a long way towards saving our One Stop Shops.

A rethink by the Labour administration is required.
