IT IS very encouraging seeing people in the East End taking up the fight to save the Bonner Street School building in Bethnal Green. It is a great example of a type of building that could soon vanish from our streets forever.

Bonner Street School could be one of the earliest casualties of 'Building Schools for the Future,' a government programme that has set aside billions of pounds to modernize our schools. The easiest way to do this, and what is planned at Bonner Street, is to knock down the old school and put up a new one.

This is just what we don't want to happen. We are not involved with rebuilding schools, as reported (Advertiser, April 27).

Instead we are trying to show that Victorian schools like Bonner Street can be brought up to modern standards with a little bit of imagination. They are valued by communities and help make the places we live special.

We should think about the huge gap Bonner Street School would leave behind and fight against the bulldozers.

Dr Kathryn Ferry,

The Victorian Society.
