I bang head against brick wall to get bins emptied

Dear Editor,

I AM tired of opening my front door every day and seeing the rubbish full because the binmen haven't cleared it.

Renovation work started on my block in May and at first I didn't notice a problem.

But by the end of June I noticed the bins hadn't been cleared for a fortnight. There were black bin bags everywhere.

Then one night I saw foxes ripping bags open. I knew I had to make the call.

I phoned up Tower Hamlets Waste and was told they would send a truck round the next day, so I asked the builders not to park in the flats so the binmen wouldn't use it as an excuse for not doing their job.

They didn't block access. But I was right... the binmen did use this as an excuse!

I got home from work that day and found heaps of rubbish everywhere. A neighbour said the street cleaners took one look at all the rubbish and also walked away.

Not happy about this, I phoned up Tower Hamlets again and was told they would send another truck the next day. I phoned up my landlords, Spitafields Housing, to come to the estate to see how bad things were.

It is summer holidays and the kids can't play out because of the mess everywhere.

There are maggots. I'm surprised rats aren't here yet... but am sure it won't be long!

I am tired of being told the problem "will be resolved" and nothing is getting done.

The binmen aren't even driving onto the estate in now. They still say it's because of the builders, but the builders are not blocking access. I sorted that out with the site manager.

The waste manager says Spitafields Housing is responsible, but Spitafields Housing doesn't return calls. I guess they don't care either!

No-one wants to take responsibility. Everyone covers up for the other.

I have been told by Tower Hamlets Waste they will "sort it" so many times now I know what they're going to say before they say it!

In the 17 years I have lived in Cheverell House I have never seen it like this.

I've just about had enough, banging my head against a brick wall.
